Get a recommendation →Shop pinion gears at AMain →It depends on your motor and the track. In the 1/10 4WD short course truck class, racers gear by final drive ratio: 4000 kV and up near 11.00. On the Slash 4X4's stock 54T spur that is about 19T for 4000 kV and up. Tight tracks gear down, open tracks gear up. For a starting pinion matched to your motor, use the So Dialed Pinion Recommender with the Slash 4X4 selected.
The Slash 4X4 has an internal ratio of 3.92:1. Final drive ratio = spur ÷ pinion × 3.92. With the stock 54T spur, a 13T pinion gives an FDR of 16.28 and a 20T gives 10.58.

Out of the box the Slash 4X4 runs 30 wt front, 30 wt rear (Traxxas oil), on 1.5mm hole front, 1.6mm hole rear pistons. That is the kit setup; you will need to adjust it for your track conditions. The RC Setup App can help dial it in.
The kit springs are GTR long 0.767 black (#7444) front, GTR xx-long 0.874 black (#7446) rear. Stiffer springs suit high grip and big jumps; softer springs add grip on slick or bumpy tracks.
The kit diff fluid is 30,000 cst front, 100,000 cst center. Thicker front adds steering on power; thicker center sends more drive rearward; thicker rear stabilizes the car under throttle.
