How to convert RC shock oil cSt to weight (wt)

To convert RC shock oil from centistokes to weight, divide the cSt value by 10. To go the other way, multiply weight by 10. For example, 500 cSt = 50 wt, 1,000 cSt = 100 wt, and 30 wt = 300 cSt. This is the convention used by most US brands (Associated, Losi, Pro-Line, Trinity, MIP, JConcepts); Mugen, Yokomo, Hudy, and AKA already label their oil in cSt directly.

How RC shock oil viscosity is labeled

  • Centistokes (cSt) is the actual viscosity unit used by oil manufacturers.
  • Weight (wt) is an older convention — most US brands (AE, Losi, Pro-Line, Trinity, MIP, JConcepts) approximate cSt × 0.1. So "30 wt" ≈ 300 cSt.
  • Mugen, Yokomo, Hudy, AKA label oil in cSt directly. Mugen 400 = 400 cSt.
  • • Brand-to-brand viscosities at the same label vary a few percent — close enough to start, then dial in by feel.
  • • Higher cSt = stiffer damping, slower shock movement. Lower cSt = faster, more compliant.
